Bare Root Tree
Planting Directions

  1. Soaking: Submerge the roots in water overnight or 12-24 hours before planting. This helps rehydrate the tree and promotes better root growth.

  2. Site Selection: Choose a planting site with well-draining soil and adequate sunlight for the specific tree species. Consider factors like mature size both height and width.

  3. Digging the Hole: Dig a hole that's wide enough to accommodate the spread roots without bending or crowding. The depth should be enough to cover the roots but not bury the trunk.

  4. Soil Amendments: If your soil is sandy, mix in some organic matter, like compost, with the existing soil to improve fertility. Avoid planting too deep, especially in clay soils. When planting in clay soil, it’s best not to mix in any amendments with the clay too much because this can create a bowl effect with the surrounding clay holding water near the roots. Better to add some compost on top and work in layers with clay.

  5. Placement: Position the tree in the center of the hole, spreading the roots evenly.

  6. Backfilling: Fill the hole with the amended soil or remaining clay soil, gently tamping it down to eliminate air pockets. Water the tree as you backfill to settle the soil.

  7. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. This helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

  8. Watering: Water the tree regularly, especially during the first growing season. Adjust the frequency based on your soil type and climate, aiming for consistently moist (not waterlogged) soil.

  9. Staking: While not always necessary, staking can provide support for the tree during windy conditions. Use flexible ties and remove the stakes after the first growing season.

If you can’t plant immediately, bare root trees can be stored for some time in a cold but not freezing location like a greenhouse, unheated garage or even your refrigerator. Just keep the roots moist and the tops dry.
